Naming ceremonies should be a special and unique occasion for the family, I am here to help make this the perfect occasion for you and your family.

Naming ceremonies give you, your family and your friends a chance to welcome your child, no matter the age, into the family. There is nothing more precious in this world than your child, and there is a lifetime of opportunity ahead for them, so this is the chance to celebrate this precious new beginning.

What is a naming ceremony?

Naming ceremonies are a symbolic celebration that requires no licences and has no legalities. If a formal christening is not for you, then a naming ceremony for your baby or young child is the ideal alternative to recognise and celebrate their arrival into your family.

Can I have a naming ceremony for my older child?

Although we often refer to this type of ceremony as Baby Naming, a child of any age can have a ceremony. If you have a blended family and you want to welcome another child, perhaps an adopted child, into your family, turning this into a special occasion is a wonderful way to introduce them to the wider family and close friends. Many people also choose to combine a ceremony with a birthday, but children of any age can have a naming ceremony.

Can I have Godparents at a naming ceremony?

The ceremony can take any format that you choose. It can be a simple welcome to the world, a formal naming of your child, or a blessing for your baby and family. It is also a time for you to make certain promises and commitments to your child, and for other important people in your child’s life to give well wishes, and pledge their support.

The ceremony itself will be written specifically for you. Therefore, if you do not practise any religion, Godparents can still play an important role and can be referred to as Supporting Adults.

What is the format of a naming ceremony?

There is no set format, what works for one family might not work for yours. I am here to help you create something which is truly unique. Perhaps you want family and friends to take part in the ceremony. They might read a poem or blessing or they could be part of a symbolic action such as, the lighting of candles, blending sand or adding wishes to a Tree of Life.

Using vows, poems, music and readings that are meaningful to you, there is freedom to create a personal ceremony full of joy. And if there are other siblings to be involved in this special occasion – then so much the better. Some families may even like to combine a wedding and a naming ceremony into one big joyful event. A naming day is a celebration about, and for, your entire family.

How long do naming ceremonies take?

The ceremony lasts about 30 minutes on average and is conducted by myself, with any additional support that the family choose.

Where do naming ceremonies take place?

You may want to use a local venue for your ceremony, but you can hold your ceremony in any location – your home or garden, a local park, beach or hired venue with the necessary approval of owners.
